Modern Duplex House Design by GRAFT Architects
USA and Germany based, GRAFT Architects have designed this modern house, called Duplex House. A critical programmatic goal within the house design is to establish a strong connection between the private interior zone of the house and the shared public space of the street. The primary challenge in achieving this goal lies in negotiating the 8’-0” first floor height that is required to make the houses safer from future flooding of the street level. The broad and spacious deck located in the front yard mediates the relationship between public and private by raising the deck 5’-0” above grade. This offers a welcoming gesture to the street while at the same time creating a semi-private space for the inhabitants of the house to enjoy. Read more
Urban Loft Interior by Nicholas Clark Architects
Nicholas Clark Architects have designed this Urban Loft interior in Chicago, Illinois.
This project brought many challenges due to the inherent limitations of the existing space. The space featured a mezzanine level with a small bathroom. Below the mezzanine was a small kitchen tucked into a corner and a large “storage” closet. Ceiling heights were just over six feet in the mezzanine, and 6 foot 8 inches in the kitchen space below.
A new floating stair consisting of bent raw steel, maple treads and cherry handrail was located to open up a space for a kitchen peninsula. Both bathrooms incorporate art glass windows to provide natural light to an otherwise dark, interior space. Floors and existing structural column are natural cherry. Furniture built-ins including the kitchen desk area, dining chairs, and media cabinet were also designed.
Full interior design services, including the selection of furnishings, window treatments and art consultation, were provided to achieve the entire look of this loft.
